Epic (2013)

“Epic” is a 2013 American 3D computer-animated action-adventure film based loosely on William Joyce’s 1996 children’s book “The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs”. It was produced by Blue Sky Studios and directed by Chris Wedge, known for other animated hits like “Ice Age” and “Robots”.

The film tells the story of a teenager named Mary Katherine (also known as M.K.) who gets shrunken down and finds herself involved in a battle between forces of good, the Leafmen, and the forces of evil, the Boggans, in a hidden forest world. The Leafmen are warriors who ride hummingbirds and are led by Ronin (voiced by Colin Farrell). The Boggans are creatures that spread decay and are led by Mandrake (voiced by Christoph Waltz).

The voice cast includes Amanda Seyfried as M.K., Colin Farrell, Beyoncé Knowles, Josh Hutcherson, Christoph Waltz, Aziz Ansari, Chris O’Dowd, Pitbull, Jason Sudeikis, Steven Tyler, and others. The movie was praised for its animation, voice acting, and visual style, though some critics felt that the story was somewhat generic.

“Epic” was successful at the box office and received generally positive reviews from critics. It also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature, losing out to “Frozen”.
