Step Up is a 2006 romantic dance drama film directed by Anne Fletcher. The film stars Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan as Tyler Gage and Nora Clark, two troubled youngsters in Baltimore, Maryland, who meet each other through a dance battle and eventually fall in love. Tyler is a street dancer struggling to make ends meet, while Nora is a privileged ballet dancer who has recently been accepted into the Maryland School of Arts. When Tyler is caught vandalizing a school, he is sentenced to 200 hours of community service at the school, where he meets Nora. After an initial clash of personalities, the two eventually come to an understanding and form a bond through their shared love of dance. The film features choreographed dance sequences, which were created by Hi–Hat, a hip–hop choreographer.
Step Up was met with generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the performances and the dance sequences. The film was a commercial success, grossing over $114 million worldwide and spawning four sequels.
