The Dark Knight is a 2008 superhero film based on the DC Comics character Batman. The film, directed by Christopher Nolan, stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Heath Ledger as the Joker, and Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two–Face. It is the second installment of Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Trilogy and a sequel to 2005‘s Batman Begins. The Dark Knight follows Batman as he attempts to stop the Joker from launching a criminal reign of chaos in Gotham City.
The film received critical acclaim, with praise for its performances, script, action sequences, and direction. It grossed over $1 billion at the box office, making it the second highest–grossing film of all time, behind Avatar (2009). It won two Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Heath Ledger‘s portrayal of the Joker. The Dark Knight is widely considered to be one of the greatest films of all time.
