“The Dig” is a 2021 British historical drama film directed by Simon Stone and based on the novel of the same name by John Preston. The film stars Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, Lily James, Johnny Flynn, Ben Chaplin, and Ken Stott.
Set in 1939, the film tells the true story of the discovery of the Sutton Hoo burial ship, an archaeological find that shed new light on early Anglo-Saxon history. Fiennes plays Basil Brown, a self-taught excavator who is hired by a wealthy landowner named Edith Pretty (Mulligan) to excavate the burial mounds on her estate. As the excavation progresses, they uncover an incredible treasure trove that changes the course of history.
