The Suicide Squad is a 2021 superhero film based on the DC Comics antihero team of the same name. The film is written and directed by James Gunn and serves as a standalone sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad, although it features a mostly new cast and storyline.
The film stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, and Daniela Melchior, among others, as members of the titular Suicide Squad, a team of supervillains who are recruited by the government to undertake a dangerous mission in exchange for reduced prison sentences.
The Suicide Squad received critical acclaim for its humor, action sequences, and character development, with many critics considering it a vast improvement over its predecessor. The film was particularly noted for its clever use of music and its incorporation of lesser-known comic book characters.

The Suicide Squad was released in theaters and on HBO Max in August 2021, and was later made available on home media platforms. A spin-off television series titled Peacemaker, starring John Cena’s character from the film, is currently in production for HBO Max.
